Who We Are

Founded in 2019, we are a group of volunteers, living and working in and around Cork city to help make Cork a more sustainable and zero waste city. We came together at an open meeting, concerned about the impact our actions have on the environment and wanting to do and learn more. Through our various social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn) and now this website we share information, tips and ideas about living zero waste in everyday life as well as other ways to combat and act on climate change. We don’t claim to be experts, just a bunch of people who are passionate about the environment! 

What We Do

Here at Cork Zero Waste we do a lot to make the place we call home a sustainable one. 

We’ve organised a number of events as part of our work, we’ve organised different events themed around zero waste and sustainability, from plant and seed swaps to a zero waste walking tour of Cork and a sustainable Christmas market, all with the aim of building awareness around consumption, management of our waste and educating people on the power their daily decisions can have on society. We try to understand and highlight the systemic issues around waste, and avoid blaming individuals for what is a societal responsibility. Our blog is a place to reflect and share information on waste issues, possible solutions and debunking common myths (not recycling is actually not a solution but part of the problem). Our Resource page lists the refill / second-hand shops, websites, apps ect to help you navigate a more sustainable lifestyle.

What YOU can do

Every day, you can choose to positively impact the city and our planet. ‘Zero Waste’ as a concept is about creating a circular economy, instead of discarding resources, we create a system where all resources can be resumed fully back into the system. Recycling is not a solution; the aim is to send nothing to a landfill. Reduce what we need, reuse as much as we can, send little to be recycled, and compost what we cannot.

Most of all we need to get together to speak up and denounce the system that creates the waste in the first place. We are always looking for new members and volunteers, drop us a message if you want to come along to one of our meetings, help out with blog writing, events, or just to come have a chat and share your hopes and frustrations around sustainable living.
